The Obama administration announces plans to spend $13 billion kick-starting a nationwide network of high-speed train lines.
All logistics aside (okay, so that’s a huge starter, but still), this makes me really excited. You mean we might finally follow in Europe’s footsteps and create a system of mass transportation that connects most of our major cities, vastly eliminating the need for single-occupancy cars? Fantastic! Something like this could seriously spur on cities to improve their own public transportation within their downtown/suburban areas. Coming from the Southeast, I know how utterly miserable and useless public transportation can get. I’m teased by people from walking cities about my dependence on my car, Passepartout.
If anything, the Los Angeleans sitting in hours of traffic every single day of their working lives might be happy by this prospect.
